  CHILDREN’S CONCERTS

  This collection emanates from my aborted attempt
  to integrate two great bureaucratic establishments:
  The New York Philharmonic and New York City
  Board of Education. The idea was that first-placed
  instrumentalists competitively drawn for the yearly
  All-City Youth Orchestras would win an opportunity
  to play with the pros, and that a small visiting ensemble
  of perhaps 25-30 players from the Philharmonic would
  rehearse and perform a mini-concerto with each of the
  first-placed winners, thereby engaging community interest
  and providing able youngsters with a lively encouragement.

  My work is fashioned such that each student performer
  gains the opportunity to display, within a concise pair
  of pieces, outstanding expression, ability, and technique.
  There is a two-movement mini-concerto for each major
  instrument of the orchestra — (WINDS:) Flute, Oboe,
  Clarinet, Bassoon. (BRASS:) Trumpet, Horn, Trombone,
  Tuba. (STRINGS:) Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass. The
  soloists in each instance are joined by orchestral strings
  (Vn I, Vn II, Vla, Vc, Cb) which can number as many
  or as few players-per-part as may be available. The
  professional ensemble need not require a conductor,
  though I am willing to fulfill that role if called upon. ... more
